The Hennessy Artistry Tour ended is 2010 5 city tour in NYC last night. The soiree/concert was held in lower Manhattan’s Cipriani, a major destination for high end celebrity functions. For me, aside from every album by A Tribe Called Quest, one of my favorite Hip Hop albums is Talib Kweli and Mos Def as Black Star. Everything from the beats by producers like 88-Keys and Hi-Tek to the lyrics are just mind blowing. I can’t think of one song on that album that I don’t like. Read more

Bilal is on my very short list of artists who are underrated. Bilal sprung on to the music scene in 2001with his Neosoul debut album 1st Born Second and its smooth and sultry first single Soul Sista. The Philly native, who was a jazz and opera trained singer/songwriter, was working with everyone from Common to Erykah Badu. Fans couldn’t get enough of Bilal and wanted more. In 2006, Bilal was set to release his second album, Love for Sale, but the project’s release date was pushed back and later shelved due to the project being leaked entirely online. Read more

When I saw M.I.A.‘s performance on the 2009 Grammy’s, while 9 months pregnant and due to deliver that same day, two thoughts crossed my mind, either this woman is crazy or she is extremely committed to her fans and art. As I road the packed ferry over to Governor’s Island for the HARD NYC Festival in which M.I.A. was the headliner, I began to wonder which of those two thoughts were true. Was she a highly committed artist who stops at nothing to deliver what her fans crave? Or is she just another loony who should be rushed to Bellevue Hospital instead of the main stage. Read more
