Movie Review: GOON

January 17, 2012 by
Filed under ARTS + LEISURE, FEATURED, THE DAILY

GOON the movie could be subtitled “Blood on the Ice”. The hockey fight scenes in this movie are brutal but they are tempered by the sweet performance of American Pie’s Sean William Scott as the titular goon Doug Glatt. A not so bright ex- bouncer recruited to play minor league hockey. His job in the rink is to protect the star player by any means necessary, an enforcer on the ice. The movie was written by Jay Baruchel who co-stars as Doug’s best friend who gets the films best one-liners. It was also co-written by Evan Goldberg who brought stoner comedy into the 21st century with Pineapple Express, so the jokes fly fast.

The movie features an outstanding cast that elevates the film from slapstick to heart felt. Stand-outs include Tony winning actor Liev Schrieber as the league’s top enforcer and the reluctant love interest is played the charming Allison Pill who had a break-out performance earlier this year as Zelda Fitzgerald in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. The film owes a debt to the 1977 film Slap Shot, it could be called Slap Shot 2.0. The violence and the locker room humor have all been cranked up to 11 but the film’s audaciousness and team spirit help you root for the Goon to succeed. This movie is not just for hockey fans, anyone who enjoys a laugh with a sharp blade edge should give this movie a shot.

Goon will open theatrically in select cities on March 30th.

It will also be available on Movies-on-Demand on February 24th.
