Just this past Sunday at the Soho Grand Yard I had one of the best NY dinner experiences of the summer. The Hunger NYC hosts a series of communal Pop-up dinner events beginning in May of this year. The theme was Argentinean BBQ. The pop-up dinner series will feature a new theme and menu. Chef Camille Becerra, a former Top Chef contestant is the creator of the menu series.
Since I’ve traveled to the country twice I was intrigued. Would the chimchurri be authentic? Will this be an all beef affair or a mix of meats? After being seated by the host I was about to find out. Since being a non-beefeater in Argentina is practically unheard of, constant sideways looks and glances from my dinner companions “No quieres carne?” is a question I heard daily. You would have thought I had three heads. But thankfully the pollo asado is to die for in Buenos Aires.
Back at the Hunger NYC dinner, the secondary offering was whole fish, Eureka!! Servers placed a wonderful green salad with
grilled cheese and soft baguette as the appetizer. This is family style so we all shared this dish. The greens were market fresh and delicious with yellow tomatoes and grilled to perfection potato wedges.
By the time my fish arrived I’d gotten to know a few of my dinner companions. I found that many were first time dinner guests and pleasantly surprised by the simplicity and elegance of it. I met a couple on their first date, and a group of Australians hosting a friend from home.
Sara and Jon both from living in NY via Australian and the UK commented on how they would love to do this again. “ It’s great way to show a guest NY in the summer time “ Indeed. Our fish was grilled trout stuffed with kale and quinoa and mustard seeds. It was absolutely fantastic! Meat eaters would have enjoyed the platter of tender skirt steak and chorizo.
The three types of chimichurri were perfect. The traditional green herbal, a red herbal and a mango chimichurri were all tempting. So it was perfect outdoor dinner on a perfect NY night without humidity. I know one thing, next time I hear about a communal dinner by the Hunger, I’m there!
