All Black Everything: The 2010 Blackout Awards

On March 21, 2010 The First Annual Blackout Awards were held at Newark, NJ’s Key Club, yes fashionable events do happen in New Jersey. To coincide with the theme of the awards, the Tri-State’s most fashionable came out dressed in all black to honor the makeup, hair and style heavyweights of the industry. Stylist Nolé Marin received the first ever Blackout Vanguard Award and Misa Hylton received the Naomi Sims Award of Excellence. “I followed my heart, and I followed the dreams I had in my mind and here I am today”, says Misa Hylton, who was had her three children and fiancé present. Other honorees included Atiba Newsome, Christian Balenciaga, Hadiiya Barbel, Jerod Mcclairn, Karen Dupiche, Lulu Cooper, Marco Hall, Merrell Hollis, Quintin “Q” Hardy, Ronnie Wright, Terrence Davidson, Toni Swann, Will Robinson, Willliam Marshall, Yusef Williams, uber cutie Zeric Armenteros of Model City and life coach, Dee Marshall. The event was hosted by BET correspondent, April Woodard, with Lexi Chow and Daniella Cobb serving as presenters.

This is the first event that recognizes the African American hairstylists, make-up artists, and image consultants that are responsible for the looks that we love, and sometimes hate on the stars that we know and love. In addition to the awards ceremony, guests were treated to a fashion show, complete with hairstyles by celebrity stylist, Yancey Edwards and jewelry from hip designer, Laurel Dewitt of Laureluxe.

“This awards ceremony is given by the artist to the artist”, said Yancey Edwards, hair stylist and founder and creator behind The Blackout Awards. All proceeds from the event went to help raise money for the Hyacinth AIDS Foundation, an organization that helps people live with HIV, care and treatment, counseling services and public policy advocacy.
