When holiday shopping coincides with good-will and joviality, it has a way of making the “heart” sing, or in Kenneth Coles case “Books”. The intimate event by “Making Books Sing” was hosted at the illustrious 42th street Kenneth Cole Store. With 20% of the proceeds going to the program S.A.F.E from the night’s sales; guests were ready and willing to uplift the recent economic downturn, by purchasing pieces of KC classics.S.A.F.E (Shelters, Arts, Families and Education) was created to facilitate performing and visual art activities; in order to make a positive impact. Literacy development, creativity and emotional well-being of homeless families manifest the amazing goal of this group. This is the only known art organization catering to homeless families, making their presence extremely significant. With the instrument of art conducting this program, many families have opened a new chapter in their lives, otherwise never thinking it was possible.
“Making Books Sing”, presents another outlet for this program to grow wings and fly. “The program grants these families the tools to broaden their horizons, put it in writing and express to the rest of the group” states Jenny Hartman (Associate Director of Education). However, only after vigorous exercises to get them comfortable and somewhat familiar with themselves and other guest attending. When encountering the dilemma of homelessness, very little stop to think about dreams, imaginations and hopes subdued by their unfortunate reality. “Help others start a new chapter” -Kenneth Cole “
Kenneth Cole is known for his philanthropic efforts”, stated Kimberly Wilson (Communications Manager). “When Charlynn Walker (Community Relations for Kenneth Cole) donated funds to the organization, there was no question designer Kenneth Cole would take more interest in how to get involved” Presently, Cole has done multiple events with “Making Books Sing”, which have all been exceptionally successful.
WPIX-Ch. 11 (NYC) “Morning News” anchor, Sukanya Krishnan was the VIP host and guest reader of the night. She shared an excerpt from the book “Chachaji’s Cup” by Uma Krishnaswami. As Krishnan read the story, you can tell it hit close to home. The main character in the book “Neel” was also of Indian descent living in the United States. After concluding her reading, Krishnan familiarized herself with the same struggle of culture shock and acceptance of the character. This simple presentation displayed the power of the written word and how important it must be to individuals who feel alone in this world. So, let us help books continue their beautiful songs!
